Everything about expansion two for Bungie’s “shared world shooter” Destiny makes sense to me. The changes to the competitive multiplayer portion of the game we reported on last week give PvP, for the first time, a proper endgame. The new upgrade system means any Legendary or Exotic weapon and armour piece can be made level 34 – without it losing progression. And the new Prison of Elders arena mode, revealed by Bungie today, is a cool twist on wave-based fighting and a lot of fun for three-player Fireteams. But, having played Prison of Elders, I just can’t shake the sense of disappointment about House of Wolves not adding a new Raid. Bungie has its reasons and I get them.
Destiny: House of Wolves Review (PlayStation 4)
But it was never really clear what the heck was going on beyond those airy concepts. How are the Guardians revived and who are they? What the heck is the deal with that royal family living in the space junkyard? And why do the Ghosts sound like Peter Dinklage waking up from a really long sleep? Also, what the hell are the Ghosts?
Unlike the Trials of Osiris, House of Wolves’ new competitive multiplayer mode, the Prison of Elders supports matchmaking. However you.
It is based on the House of Judgment ‘s traditions for settling disputes between Fallen through trial by combat. The Archon Priest Aksor was previously a prisoner before later being retrieved by Taniks and having his soul restored by the House of Winter on Venus. The Prison of Elders is also known to contain members of the House of Wolves that were captured during the Reef Wars , though it also contains Hive , Vex and Cabal inmates who have attacked the Reef.
These prisoners are considered “trophies” by the Reef, kept cryogenically frozen for the Queen’s benefit. Though since Skolas ‘ rebellion, the Queen now wants the prison cleared out, and has recruited the Guardians to do it. A year after the Red War , the undead Fallen horde known as the Scorn orchestrated an incredibly massive breakout from the prison, following a lack of order after Mara Sov ‘s and Variks ‘ disappearances.
Uldren Sov was behind the escape, and executed Cayde-6 with his own weapon after he attempted to stop the breakout alongside the Guardian. Numerous prisoners not strictly affiliated with the Scorn, collectively referred to as the Wanted , also escaped the prison, going on to roam Patrol zones and roost in Lost Sectors. The Prison is featured in the House of Wolves as part of the new Arena game mode.
It is limited to 3 players. The Level 28 mission includes matchmaking and is always random. The other three “challenge” missions are at Levels 32, 34, and 35, and require pre-made fireteams. The Level 32 and 34 missions rotate weekly; the Level 34 mission will be replaced with something new, while the Level 32 mission will feature the previous week’s Level 34 mission. The Level 35 mission is always Skolas’s Revenge.

Destiny fans put Bungie’s House of Wolves challenge to the sword in lvl 35 spree
As guessed by numerous fans, Prison of Elders is a variation on the Horde mode first popularized years ago by Gears of War. In the storyline of House of Wolves, most of the Fallen soldiers that previously served the Queen of the Awoken have betrayed her, but one of the Fallen remained behind in the Reef and is still loyal. This Fallen character, named Variks, acts as a warden for the prison, and he engineers an opportunity for guardians to test their mettle within the dreaded detention facility.
Variks acts both as the central narrator for the Prison, but also as the vendor for rewards. Looking beyond the story setup, Prison of Elders is built as an end-game activity for three players.
Today’s Destiny Expansion II: House of Wolves revealed yet another major addition to The “Prison of Elders” introduces a wave-based mode inspired by of Elders setup features a level 28 arena that support matchmaking.
Notably, prison keys drop upon the completion of certain bounties, and chests have a higher chance of dropping a key. I adjusted my score accordingly, yet there are still nagging issues with this game no checkpoints in Prison and unfair matchmaking in Trials. While this is nothing new for the franchise, Bungie has opted for a new challenging horde-mode conflict The Prison of Elders to compensate for the lack of a new raid.
This would be a worthy addition for the ranks of guardians, if an average gamer could actually beat the prison in a reasonable time without putting every single waking second into collecting loot drops. Also, House of Wolves marks the beginning of a grueling 3-on-3 competitive tournament The Trials of Osiris. Many Destiny gamers have been waiting for a reason to drop the game and its addictive mindset, and these wolves may be the breaking point for most of the Destiny community to never return to the reef or tower.
First of all, this expansion includes a meager five story missions, which mostly retread areas already explored in the original campaign. Admittedly, Bungie does unlock additional areas, which usually signal the start of a major conflict.
Destiny: how House of Wolves builds on the story – and why there’s no raid

The Strike included with House of Wolves is called The Shadow Thief. The base mode will have matchmaking; the challenge modes won’t.
A cleverer, more creative, more thoughtful expansion than The Dark Below, House of Wolves is Destiny at its best, with a host of fresh improvements. There’s a moment in one of House of Wolves’ campaign missions that is pure Halo. I won’t spoil too much, but here’s the gist: you emerge onto a wide-open field of battle. A fleet of alien ships hang in the sky.
A few of them peel off, descend, and deploy troops in a semi-circular arc ahead of you. The music picks up. Choose a direction. It’s a scenario straight out of Bungie’s classic playbook: the open arena, the shooter refactored as a strategic puzzle game where your finesse, situational awareness and cunning allow you to line up and eliminate enemies like Bejewelled gems.
Both Destiny ‘s launch campaign and The Dark Below leaned a little too heavily on corridors packed with bullet-sponge foes: House of Wolves learns that lesson, furnishing you with five new missions each with its own memorable set-piece battle. They are, however, rather brief.
‘Destiny’ keeps getting better as Bungie listens to fans: Here are the big new updates
House of Wolves introduces a new social space set in The Reef, a dilapidated base run by the Queen of the Awoken packed with new missions and new activities. In addition to five new story missions set all over the solar system, and a new Strike called The Shadow Thief, House of Wolves brings a muscular new PvE mode that aims to keep high-level co-op players fighting and looting. Watch our new video above to learn more.
Unlike the House of Wolves, Bungie was quite tight-lipped about the actual meat of thanks to UI improvements, weapon balancing in PvE, Weekly matchmaking, Prison of Elders was fashioned as a simple but ever-shifting.
Unlike the Trials of Osiris , House of Wolves ‘ new competitive multiplayer mode, the Prison of Elders supports matchmaking. However you decide to jump in, the Prison of Elders will throw enemies at you in increasingly difficult waves. Bungie has built this kind of thing before, of course, with Firefight, the beloved mode that debuted in ‘s Halo 3: ODST. The Prison of Elders offers four distinct setups. The standard Prison of Elders is a level 28 arena that supports matchmaking.
Three different tougher challenges will also be available: one at level 32, one at 34 the new level cap in House of Wolves and one at The first two will rotate through a group of five on a weekly basis, while the level 35 challenge will always be “Skolas’s Revenge.
The Gjallarhorn rocket launcher, when fully upgraded, tracks targets like stink on roadkill and on detonation splits into several so-called “Wolfpack rounds” that cause additional damage to bullet-sponge bosses. Though it’s an elemental solar weapon, the burn on your enemy doesn’t matter. This thing shreds the Darkness whatever the hell that is like a hot knife through butter. I say this because Gjallarhorn dropped for me, after a long pursuit, as part of Destiny’s new expansion, the House of Wolves.
You may remember I wrote about my desires for this new content back in April, where I outlined five things it would need to do to keep my attention. I’ve played through most of the story content at this point, and though I’ve yet to enter the Trials of Osiris I think I have a firm handling of what you can expect with the DLC.
Destiny bungie house of wolves Bungie’s keeping specific Prison of Elders rewards, and how to get them, under As for the game mode itself, Trials of Osiris calls for players of three (no matchmaking here either, sorry) to.
I was one of those players that was absolutely hyped up for Destiny , and was among the many who were disappointed when it turned out to be more of a standard shooter than a grand sci-fi epic. Its first expansion, “The Dark Below,” was unfortunately underwhelming with a flimsy story and a lack of matchmaking for its endgame. This mode has you and two other players fight through five rounds of increasingly more difficult enemies. Enemies are shockingly much more active and mobile than in other parts of the game, and will often flank and overrun your team if you stay in one spot too long.
Some of the rounds add in ability or weapon modifiers that can help or hinder players on top of adding special objectives, such as dismantling Guardian-killing super-mines within a time limit. The higher difficulty Prison missions which lack matchmaking, sadly feature bosses with their own gimmick, such as a Cabal centurion whose shield randomly changes type or a Hive knight that sets the ground on fire leading to some hilariously panicked bunny hopping in order to stay alive.
Also in place of a new Raid comes a new weekly competitive event, titled The Trials of Osiris. Running from Friday to Monday each week, the Trials pit two fireteams of 3 players against each other in short, brutal rounds.

Not bad for a game that was often maligned for not having enough content. That obsession disappeared with The Dark Below. The expansion compounded the original game’s problems by making the base game’s hard-won gear obsolete. This knowledge was enough for me to excuse myself from those months of daily play and wait for the promised second half of the game’s first season of extra content. That second update, House of Wolves , is here, and it carries the unenviable baggage of needing to expand on the game proper while also fixing the problems its predecessor introduced.
The first major indicator that Bungie had this in mind is The Reef. Seen only in cutscenes during Destiny ‘s base game, The Reef is now a new social hub akin to the previously accessible Tower. It also has most of the amenities of The Tower—bank terminals, a bounty officer, and a new Cryptarch—plus a few new NPCs used in the fresh content and story missions. You may recognize the areas these missions take you to, but House of Wolves reframes most of them in some interesting ways. Oracles with some added story context.
There’s also one new strike, The Shadow Thief. Once you’ve cleared those more pedestrian quests and received the first of the game’s new “Sidearm” special weapons class a semi-automatic handgun with elemental damage , it’s time to head back to The Reef for House of Wolves’ main attractions. The Prison of Elders comes with two very important distinctions from all the other modes in Destiny ‘s gamut of time sinks.
Destiny: House of Wolves
There has been concern that the lack of a raid would leave the House of Wolves feeling a little light on content. This priority shift was reflected in the months preceding the House of Wolves release, in which Bungie shrewdly revealed much of its new expansion in calculated press releases, featuring community guests who were ostensibly given free rein with their questions.
This strategy spoke to a company confident in its product, or at least one that that wanted to pre-empt accusations of a lack of transparency in communicating with its playerbase. Of course, this moral high ground would have eroded completely if House of Wolves had not held up.
